by Karen Brown on August 3rd, 2010

Our Venture Services Group is looking to add an Executive-in-Residence (EiR) with expertise in mobile, wireless and/or digital media.

What an Executive-in-Residence does

EiRs work one-on-one with early-stage and emerging tech companies in Waterloo Region, offering them the benefit of hard-earned business savvy and connecting them (through our Venture Services Group) to the many operational and technological resources they need to succeed.

This is an opportunity to help passionate entrepreneurs bring their big ideas to fruition (and stop them from making your mistakes), refresh your own networks, and add to the region’s business ecosystem.

Please visit our Venture Services page for more information.

This is a part-time part or full-time position.

About you

You should have CEO-level experience leading a sizable tech company or have founded at least one significant venture. Most of our EiRs have held senior industry roles or have several past ventures on their C.V.. Extensive experience raising capital, P&L responsibility, corporate leadership, etc are nice-to-haves.

The current team consists of Chris Howlett, Dan Mathers, David Strucke, Mark McArdle and Amol Karnick.

Technology in Cambridge: from silk to the space age

by Jim Beretta on July 23rd, 2010

Jim connects Cambridge companies to Communitech’s regional network.

Hi, I’m Jim Beretta and I’ve worked in Cambridge and the advanced manufacturing industry for over 15 years.

Cambridge has both a glorious past and an innovative future. Historically, the awesome force of the Grand river attracted textile, grist and silk mills — and many thriving local companies can trace their roots back to Canada’s early industrial era.

Turning History into World-Class Competency

Today, Cambridge has turned that industrial heritage into a tremendous technological competency: Advanced Manufacturing.

We make everything here: food, cars, satellites, robotics, software, and specialized machinery and equipment for the medical/pharmaceutical and nuclear industries. We also host packaging, forestry, mining, and companies in the clean-tech, green-tech industry (including bio, wind and solar).

These advanced manufacturers feed a host of service providers and contractors, who provide transportation, research & development, engineering, programming, project management, and the city’s core industrial competency: machining, tool & die and fabrication.

Cambridge, Communitech and the power of networks

Part of my job is to sit down with technology companies in Cambridge and the surrounding area. We talk about technology, branding, digital/social media, funding, competition, growth and the resources they need to succeed.

But the conversation always comes around to the two most valuable and neglected company resources: talent and networks. I’ll be exploring these topics and profiling Cambridge organizations in my future posts.

Feel free to share your feedback, questions and topic ideas.

Downtown Kitchener factories to become upscale commercial space

by Trevor Stafford on July 22nd, 2010

A rendering of the proposed 'signature' building.

A moribund group of factory buildings at King and Breithaupt is set to become a new commercial area near downtown Kitchener.

The six buildings, some dating to 1903, once shod World War II troops and manufactured auto parts. Sometime in 2011 (if the marketing spin is to be believed) they’ll house latte-drinking, creative-class professionals working out of retrofitted yellow brick offices.

One of the “Breithaupt Block” structures is set for a significant glass-and-steel makeover (see rendering). That building will welcome a single ’signature’ tenant, as described by developer Perimeter Corporation, in its 44,000 sq. ft space.

The proposed site will feature 350 parking spots and open-air public spaces.
