Waterloo Region: Accelerating Canada’s Digital Economy

by Avvey Peters on July 8th, 2010

Already well-known as Canada’s fastest-growing tech cluster, Waterloo Region is developing critical mass as a digital media cluster as well.

Worldwide, the digital media sector is one of the fastest-growing segments of the knowledge economy. PWC estimates the global market will reach US $2.2 trillion within the next five years.

Waterloo Region is taking advantage of this global opportunity at a regional, provincial, and national level. Part of the strategy has been to build a Digital Media and Mobile Accelerator in the heart of the Region – The Communitech Hub – a 30,000 square foot facility to facilitate collaboration on digital media tools and applications. The Communitech Hub: Digital Media and Mobile Accelerator has signed a lease and construction is well underway, with occupancy expected summer 2010.

“We’re looking forward to helping Canada create more multi-national companies that are banner success stories, which is what this is all about,” said Iain Klugman, President and CEO of Communitech. “

In addition to support from the City of Kitchener, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada, Kevin Tuer, VP Digital Media and CDMN’s Managing Director, noted that private sector support from regional heavyweights like RIM, Open Text Corporation, Christie, Desire2Learn and Agfa HealthCare has been instrumental.

With their expertise and equipment, young companies will have a chance to flourish.

An incomplete list of mobile development companies in Waterloo Region

by Trevor Stafford on March 3rd, 2010

Artists Rendering of the HUB

Artist's Rendering of the HUB

With the news that Digital Media and Mobile Accelerator Centre (aka The HUB) has signed its lease (PDF) at the Tannery building in downtown Kitchener, I thought it high time to create a list of the region’s digitally-oriented companies.

This is not a complete list. It is perhaps not even a good list. But you can improve it and add to it as you please.

Please do.

(Most of the companies either have or are closely tied to a mobile product (apps, games, etc). You can add service/prof. services companies to the list if they meet that criteria)
